Churchill Downs announced on Thursday that a new point system will be use to determine entrants in the Kentucky Derby. New Mexico’s premier three year old thoroughbred  race, the Sunland Derby made the second tier of the point system. This could be great news for Sunland Park Racetrack as the new system will likely increase the number of  Kentucky Derby hopefuls coming into the Sunland Derby.

Churchill Downs has abandoned the system that awarded spots in the Kentucky Derby to horses with the most graded stakes earnings in favor of a system that will award points to the top four finishers in 36 stakes races leading up to the Derby.
