Thursday’s announcement of a new point system that will feature 36 selected prep races is good news for Sunland Park Racetrack.  Not only did the Sunland Derby make the cut to remain a Kentucky Derby prep race, the new point system may bring more of the top three year olds looking to get a Kentucky Derby berth into Sunland Park.

“We’re fortunate to be included and this new system could help us,” Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino General Manager Harold Payne. “Owners and trainers may have to change their program and which races they want to compete in. There is more emphasis on the three-year old races in the spring than the two-year-old season.”
